Hayaoshi — Quick-Press Duel | 2 Players, 1 Phone, Beat the Signal

A party game everyone can play on one phone — free, with no sign-up. This one is a quick-press duel for exactly two players, best of five rounds: you both wait for the gray square in the middle to turn into a yellow star, and whoever taps first after it wins. It isn’t a quiz buzzer — it’s a reflex game. From round 2, a look-alike fake (a yellow ● or a blue ★) may flash first — fall for it and you’re out for that round. Two players lean in over the screen: the left player uses the ○ button at bottom left, and the right player uses the △ button at bottom right. The signal is the gray square in the middle turning into a yellow star, and whoever presses first after it wins the round. Both the color and the shape change, so the signal is clear even if colors are hard to tell apart. Press before the signal and you jump the gun: you’re out for that round and your opponent wins it. If the two presses are less than 30 ms apart, the round is a draw. Each round’s result shows how long after the signal each of you pressed and the gap between you (like “○ was 0.08s faster”), so you can tell a near miss from a press that never came. A round only starts once both players have lifted their fingers off the screen, and the wait before the signal changes every time. After five rounds, the player with more wins takes the match. The final screen shows the final score, who won each round, and what happened in the match — comebacks, jumped guns and dead heats — and you can share the same recap as an image. A rematch starts as soon as both of you press “Play again”. Rounds where nobody presses after the signal don’t count. On a computer, the left player uses the A key and the right player uses L. This is not an online game: both players share the same device, and nothing is saved.

How to play

  1. Hold the phone upright and lean in together. The left player’s button is ○ at bottom left; the right player’s is △ at bottom right
  2. Both press your own button to get ready. The round starts once both of you lift your fingers
  3. When the gray square in the middle becomes a yellow star, press your button right away. The first to press wins the round
  4. Press before the signal and you’re out for that round (your opponent wins it). Presses less than 30 ms apart are a draw
  5. Most wins after five rounds takes the match. The final screen recaps every round; both press “Play again” for a rematch. A round where nobody presses after the signal doesn’t count

Keyboard: A left player (○) presses / L right player (△) presses (holding a key or key repeat counts only once; a round won’t start while a key is held down)
