Tsumi — Keep the balance

A puzzle about placing boxes, each marked with its weight, on a long plank. The plank rests on a stand, and if the balance point of everything on it moves past the edge of the stand, it tips that way and the pile falls. Boxes do not fall on their own and cannot be rotated: the only choice is where to drop each one. While you aim, a ▼ shows where the balance point would end up, so a single box is easy — but on stages with a low ceiling or a heavy box saved for last, where you put the earlier boxes decides whether the last one still fits. 7 stages, and the fewer falls you need, the better your record.

How to play

  1. The box floating at the top is the one you are placing. Slide your finger left or right to move it; let go and it drops straight down there
  2. The ▼ under the plank shows where the balance point would go. Inside the stand's top edge, the plank stays level; outside, it tips the way the arrow points
  3. You cannot stack above the ceiling line, and a box needs support under its middle (otherwise it would slide off)
  4. The Next row shows the boxes still to come. A fall restarts the stage. Your total falls over 7 stages are saved

Keyboard: ←→ move the box (Shift for 4 steps) / Enter, Space or ↓ drop / R restart the stage

Balance point and stand

The balance point is where the weight of the plank and everything on it evens out. The plank rests on the top edge of the stand, so while the balance point is within that width the plank stays level; once it moves outside, the plank pivots on that edge of the stand and tips over. Heavier boxes pull the balance point harder.

How the stages progress

Stages 1 and 2 start tilted by a weight already on the plank, and you level it by where you place. From stage 3 the ceiling is low, so the middle cannot hold everything, and stage 4 saves a heavy box for last. Stage 5 has a narrow stand, stage 6 a stand off to one side, and stage 7 asks you to place six boxes.

Tips

Look at the Next row first. If a heavy box is coming, keep a spot free for it and leave the balance leaning the other way so it still fits. Putting the current box in the safest middle spot can leave nowhere for the later ones. If nowhere is safe any more, press ↺ to retry.

Records and round two

Your record is the number of falls across all 7 stages — fewer is better. Every stage has been checked by trying every possible placement, so there is always a way to place every box without a fall. Round two mirrors each stage left to right.
