Tobatsu — Read the Bone Giant’s slam, then strike

A free 3D boss battle in your browser, with no sign-up. In a round rocky arena you face a giant skeleton with an axe, one on one. You are a knight with a sword and shield. On a phone, move freely with the stick at the bottom left, roll with Dodge and slash with Attack at the bottom right (on a computer, move with WASD or the arrow keys, attack with Space and dodge with Shift). The giant has a single attack: it raises its axe and slams it into the ground. While it winds up, its eyes and axe glow, it growls, and a red circle fills where the axe will land. Step out of the circle, or roll at the moment of the slam; you cannot be hit for 0.3 seconds after a roll starts. The slammed axe sticks in the ground, and until the giant pulls it out, it is open. Strikes during that opening deal heavy damage; other strikes are blocked by the axe handle and barely hurt it. Your combo goes up to three slashes, and the third hits hard. When the giant drops below two thirds and one third of its health it staggers, then winds up faster and slams twice in a row. You have five hearts, and five hits end the fight. When you lose, the game tells you what hit you last (you stayed in the circle, or dodged too early or too late, by how many seconds), and you can fight again right away. A fight takes 60 to 90 seconds. Each win gets a grade from S to C based on time and hits taken, and meeting certain conditions earns titles (11 in all). Your top five times stay on your device, and you can share the result as an image card that includes the moment of victory.

How to play

  1. On a phone, move with the stick at the bottom left. On a computer, use WASD or the arrow keys
  2. When the giant raises its axe, a red circle fills where it will land. Leave the circle, or roll with Dodge (Shift) right as it slams. You cannot be hit for 0.3 seconds after a roll starts
  3. While the slammed axe is stuck in the ground, the giant is open. Get close and slash with Attack (Space). You can chain up to three slashes
  4. Strikes outside an opening are blocked by the axe handle and barely hurt. Below two thirds and one third of its health the giant staggers, then slams faster and twice in a row
  5. You have five hearts. When you lose, the game shows what hit you, and you can fight again right away
